Position Objective:


The Automation and Controls Specialist will identify, design and implement improvements to equipment and processes to optimize the manufacturing process.   The position will provide sustainable gains in product quality, process yield and efficiency by utilizing statistical analysis, root-cause analysis, design of experiments and CI principles. The position will lead optimization projects as identified. The position will troubleshoot complex problems and develop lasting solutions to re-occurring issues.

Performance Standards

Process Design

Conceive and plan projects, in collaboration with manufacturing team, involving major production activities (plant tests and commercialization of new products), exploration of product and/or process problems, definition and selection of new concepts and approaches in manufacturing operations.

Product Optimization

Identify, research and adapt machine and equipment design to accommodate factory and production improvements including preparation of cost justification and capital request documents.

Lead projects involving design and procurement of new equipment, specifying evaluating and recommending new technologies, strategies and methods that will benefit operations, as needed.

Production Support

Ensure PM, programming, system modifications, troubleshooting and repair of the following systems are completed accurately and in a timely manner.

Plant processes (fermentation, packaging, shipping and utilities, etc.)

Automation systems (Yokogowa DCS, PLC Logic, PI Historian, etc.)

Facility systems infrastructure (servers, phones, printers, PC's, etc.) as an extension of the HQ IT group.

Realize and implement new automation systems.

Provide plant IT systems support (CMMS, WOW, LX, WMS, PI, etc.)

Provide technical support for installation and upgrade of process instrumentation and PLC hardware, including development of function design documents, PLC programs and HMI configurations.

Mentor technicians in the area of automation and instrumentation.

Develop SOP's and PM programs for Instrumentation and control systems

Continuous Improvement

Lead projects to accomplish measurable manufacturing objectives.

Monitor production standards and investigate methods of improvement where standards are not being met. Take action to insure sustainment of results achieved through various CI events.

Study and improve manufacturing processes, procedures and sequence of operations aimed at lowering manufacturing costs. Aid in creating, implementing and maintaining Standard Work for all production areas.

Conduct time studies for time standard development, plant and process layout, optimizing product flow, equipment and labor utilization.   Create an understanding of material flow and design optimized layouts.

Innovate, recommend and collaborate with technical teams to develop new processes/services in a timely and cost effective manner.

Complete plant trials to support all corporate strategies and initiatives utilizing the plant trial database process and procedures.

Provide technical training for operators to support making decisions at the lowest level.

Provide innovative tools that support operators making changes to the process as authorized and required.

Work with employees to identify and scope new process improvement opportunities in the areas of quality, cost, performance and preventative/predictive maintenance.

Provide technical support and training to employees to improve operational effectiveness.

Work with employees to identify and troubleshoot issues and ensure corrective action is taken as appropriate and required.

Develop projects to eliminate waste and streamline the manufacturing flow.

Technical degree, or equivalent experience.

5-10 years experience in manufacturing plants, in the areas of maintenance, process, utilities, packaging and facility management.

Strong computer skills.

Good oral and written communication skills; team spirit, dynamic, innovative, results oriented and autonomous.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and talk, hear and smell. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

The employee must have a working knowledge of hand tools and be able to operate meters, calibration devices, and other instruments as required. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
